He started his career with the Brazilian Air Force, where he worked on the execution side as an air crew member, and on the planning side of logistics and air transportation at the operational level. His responsibilities included inventory management, scheduling, project management, relationship with internal suppliers, and air crew training.

Dr. Bernardes experience in the air transportation and aerospace sectors has had an enduring impact on his career and interests. It was the foundation for his doctoral research, which examined strategic sourcing and social capital, and his continued interest in engagements that are multidisciplinary in nature or that requires systems thinking. His experience while working for the world’s third largest aircraft manufacturer enabled him to observe the dynamics and some of the challenges and opportunities surrounding global supply network interactions and operations first hand. Hired under the Young Talent Initiative, a fast track program aimed at training and developing selected employees to ascend to critical leadership roles, he experienced or was exposed to many aspects of global supply chain design and operation, from product development, to global strategic sourcing, product certification, quality, manufacturing, and delivery. This experience further honed his capacity to work on multifunctional teams from his earlier years with the Air Force and his ability to bring a systemic view to planning and decision-making. It also further sparked his interest on innovation and improvement.

He has received various awards and recognitions on research, teaching, and service, from the Academy of Management, Journal of Supply Chain Management, and the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals – Minneapolis Chapter, among others. He has taught, advised students, and developed curriculum at the undergraduate, MBA, and Ph.D. levels, and has experience assessing and leading academic program development.
